Before Estée Lauder, Sowmya held leadership positions at NBCUniversal and AT&T, where she spearheaded digital innovation. She holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and an MS in Engineering from N.C. State University, and is also a licensed private pilot with a passion for aviation.

What motivated you to enroll in The Corporate Governance program?
I enrolled in the Corporate Governance program to deepen my executive-level expertise, particularly in technology, and prepare to transition to a board-level role. My goal is to provide strategic guidance, drive technology investments, and foster strong compliance and risk management practices. This program equips me with the tools and insights needed to enhance decision-making and promote ethical governance, allowing me to have a meaningful impact on organizations.
What key takeaways from the Corporate Governance Program have had the most significant impact on your professional journey?
This program deepened my understanding of effective governance principles and formal frameworks while highlighting the importance of engaging with stakeholders—investors, employees, customers, and the community—to build trust and transparency. The guest speakers were outstanding, sharing valuable insights and real-life examples. Overall, the program offered a practical approach to board governance and provided numerous strategies for effectively operating on a board.
How has your participation in the program enhanced your approach to leadership and decision-making?
Participating in the program profoundly transformed my approach to leadership and decision-making by providing a clear understanding of the distinct roles and responsibilities—from the board chair to board members—insights that are essential for successful leaders aiming to excel in governance roles. Transitioning from an executive role to a board position demands a fundamentally different perspective, and grasping this distinction is essential for effective governance. Such a transition requires a comprehensive understanding of board responsibilities and decision-making processes to ensure success. Moreover, I gained valuable insights into how boards can make informed decisions, adeptly manage risks and uncertainties, and implement strategic visions and initiatives that safeguard the organization's long-term success.
