Signals Go Far Beyond Speech: A signal is any transmission of information—through gestures, actions, decisions, or processes. Even organizational tools like KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) or the hiring of specific consultants send signals that communicate what a leader truly values.
The "Whisper Is a Shout" Principle: As leaders become more senior, their every move is under a microscope. A leader’s presence, mood, or even silence can be amplified and interpreted—or misinterpreted—across the organization, making self-awareness essential.
Communication Is Measured by What Is Understood, Not What Is Said: There is often a gap between a leader’s intent and how the message is received. Because people interpret signals based on their own life experiences and cultural backgrounds, leaders must actively check for alignment and reinforce messages in multiple ways.
Active Listening Is a High-Level Leadership Skill: Often overlooked by senior executives, active and empathetic listening helps surface different perspectives and build trust. Shifting from “proving horsepower” to listening enables leaders to better understand their teams and make more informed decisions.
Cultural Context Dictates How Signals Are Received: Leaders working in global environments must account for differences such as low-context versus high-context communication and whether cultures build trust through tasks or relationships. Frameworks like the Culture Map help leaders adjust their signals to ensure they are interpreted as intended across regions.
