Q&A with Daniel Braie
Daniel Braie, Managing Director/CEO, Linkage Assurance Plc, has had a distinguished career in insurance, spanning over four decades, with leadership roles in several top insurance companies in Nigeria. A firm believer in the importance of governance, Daniel enrolled in the Corporate Governance Program at Columbia Business School Executive Education to deepen his understanding of board dynamics and ensure his organization thrives with a strong governance culture. We asked him to share his experience and how the program has shaped his professional journey.
What motivated you to enroll in The Corporate Governance program?
An organization with a strong governance culture is more likely to stand the test of time. Good governance begins at the board level and permeates throughout the organization. I wanted to ensure that this became a core part of my company's culture, and the Corporate Governance Program at Columbia Business School Executive Education seemed the ideal way to achieve that. I’m glad I attended—it spoke directly to the critical issues of good governance that, if neglected, can lead to the downfall of even the most successful companies.
What key takeaways from the Corporate Governance Program have had the most significant impact on your professional journey?
The fast-evolving business environment requires boards to adapt to more responsibilities beyond the traditional role of providing strategic direction. The learning outcomes for me were invaluable:
- A reminder that we should always view governance from the ownership, director, and executive perspectives, and understand the specific roles directors play in fostering effective governance.
- The need for diversity in board skills, backgrounds, and strengths is an important driver of board effectiveness.
- The major issue in value creation often stems from a lack of alignment with the business’s vision and mission. Our role as directors is to set agendas that add value to the business.
- There is a constant need to balance short-term interests with the long-term sustainability of board decisions.
- Boards should place more emphasis on the role of the Audit Committee, which is critical to governance.
How has your participation in the program enhanced your approach to leadership and decision-making?
The program highlighted the far-reaching impact of board decisions, both in the short and long term. Case studies demonstrated the importance of careful consideration before making decisions, keeping in mind the fiduciary duties that directors hold. This reinforced the need for leadership to consult widely before making significant decisions, which has become central to my approach.
What advice would you give to others considering this program?
The Corporate Governance Program is a must for directors and anyone aspiring to board roles. The insights you gain are invaluable for navigating the complexities of modern governance, and the lessons learned will help ensure long-term success for your organization.
